A 'Cup' Above the Rest

Coffee and tea are two drinks I enjoy on a regular basis. I've probably consumed enough caffeine from both, to keep all of Indiana awake for a year. I love the smell, the taste and the warmth of coffee, not to mention the added energy boost. Tea, especially peppermint, is usually just a soothing close to a long day for me. Coffee on the other hand, starts my day and gets me through it. When I'm enjoying a good cup of Joe nothing makes it taste better than drinking it from a cherished coffee cup. It's odd really, how the coffee tastes better from this particular cup, but it does!

There it is in all its' glory, my favorite coffee cup, valued above all others. To the casual onlooker it's merely a mass produced piece of pottery by Hall Pottery Co. But to me, the proud owner, it's a priceless heirloom of a time too quickly gone by.

If memories were coffee, or tea, this cup would be over flowing. My mind fills to the brim every time I use it. Just like the memories it holds, this simple piece of brown pottery has held at least a gazillion cups of coffee. Coffee that was savored sip by sip by my dear grandmother. She loved her coffee and I guess you could say I followed in her sip steps. Ha ha!

Grandma was a gem, a treasure now in heaven. Her memory is melded to the cup I inherited. However, I already had one just like it.

Yes, before inheriting grandma's coffee cup I had found one of those mass produced Hall Pottery cups of my very own. It matched perfectly, but it didn't hold a candle to the one her hands actually held. Like a reflection in a wishing well, I see my grandmother's face and love in every cup full. It's almost as if I'm sitting across the table from her as she patiently listens to another of my stories while drinking her coffee.

Grandma and I spent countless hours together this way. On many such occasions she would give me a sip or two from her cup, another 'sip step' I'm sure. I never experienced any stunted growth! But that's a whole other subject altogether, one I may touch on in later reflections. I did, however, experience cherished moments in time with a precious lady who was a 'cut' above the rest. One whose memory lives on in my heart and in every cup of coffee or tea I enjoy in her coffee cup.
