A Mishawaka Police Officer was killed in the line of duty, when his squad car was sideswiped at the intersection of Brykit and McKinley around 9 p.m. this evening. The officer was in route to assist on a call when the accident occurred. Also killed was the officer's 8 year old K9 partner.
Police Officers risk their lives on a daily and nightly basis. This is no news flash, we all know this to be fact. So why does it take a tragedy like this to jolt us into reality? Why does it seem we only give thought to it in the midst of one? How often do we think about their sacrifice in the absence of tragedy? I ask myself these questions every time I hear of something like this. All too often we don't stop to think about or thank our Officers, and their families, for their great sacrifice before it's too late.
I was thinking on this further, realizing that everyday they kiss their families goodbye and walk out the door to serve and protect. Walking out into uncertainty, bravely facing whatever evil may befall their communities; and the people they swore to protect. While back at home their families wait and pray that they return unscathed and safe at the end of a shift.
Tonight, one Officer won't be coming home and his family will experience their greatest fear. This unforeseen tragedy gives testimony to what I was getting at in my post yesterday. None of us is promised tomorrow and each breath we take is a gift.
My heart and prayers go out to the family of our fallen Officer; and to his fellow Mishawaka Police Dept. brothers. May he rest in peace.
