Thrifty Thursday, #9

Hellooooooo, fellow thrifters!  Welcome to my place!

I'm so glad you're here and I hope you're ready for a mega Thrifty Thursday post, here goes.

This week I'm starting out with a couple thrifty finds by my very own Mr. Thrifter, from a week ago.  My husband, Pete, accompanies me on my thrifty adventures quite frequently.

Since the money Mr. Thrifter earns pays for the thrifting, I thought it was only fitting to give him a little blog time.

A week ago, we went to a local Goodwill store.  I know, what's new right?

He immediately headed for "his" sections and I headed for "my" sections.  That's the difference between the Mr. and the Mrs. Thrifter, we have specific sections.  Mine being MUCH more interesting than his . . . usually!

While I was perusing "my" sections--housewares and the knicky knacky things--he comes waltzing up from "his" manly sections with a proclamation!

"You'll never guess what I found!  You've gotta see this."

I was intently looking over the selections before me, when he so RUDELY interrupted.  (I am just poking fun at my husband here.  He reads my blog.  I didn't really think he was being rude.)  So, I was a good sport and played along.  With a bit of annoyance (again teasing here) and eyes still fixed on my possible treasures I asked,

"What did you find, dear?"

What he had to share was quite interesting INDEED!  I was later glad he had intruded upon my delightful rummaging, to share his VERY interesting find.

Do you want to know what he found?  Well of course you do, silly!

He had found a Head Genesis 720 tennis racket.  You can commence with the "Oooing and ahhhing" now.  Mind you, these tennis rackets retail for about $120 bucks brand new.  Keep that in mind.  I know you can hardly contain yourselves can't you?  Exciting, isn't it?

NOT. . . to me!  Just kidding.

But it wasn't just ANY tennis racket . . . Oh NO!

Mr. Thrifter, upon inspecting his manly find, discovered a piece of paper inside the case.

Paper will prove to be the REAL treasure in this story.  What that little piece of paper provided was a VERY interesting little tidbit.

It seems the donated item was previously owned by none other than my Gynecologist, Dr. Meekhof.  You're probably asking yourself, "Did I read that right?"

Yep, you read that right!

Now I know I just divulged WAY to much information for the internet--or any male followers that may be reading, so sorry--but it HAD to be said.  It's just too strange NOT to be said.

But wait . . . the story gets EVEN better . . .

Remember when I said, "PAPER would prove to be the REAL treasure"?

Well, I present the first President of the United States of America, George Washington!

The second piece of paper Mr. Thrifter pulled out of that case was the MOST valuable of them all.

A single dollar bill.  YEP!  You read that right!  He found moolah, cold hard cash, a buck, one greenback and boy of boy was that man ever EXCITED!

THAT was a thrifter's dream!  The price of the racket was only $2.00.  But the monetary booty found inside brought the cost down to. . . a single dollar.

LOVE IT!!!!  So worth getting interrupted!

It was thrift store perfection!  My husband should go down in history, in the Thrifter's Hall of Fame!

Continuing on with Mr. Thrifter's finds.  He also found this camera tripod that just so happens to be the exact model needed for our digital camera.

It was a bargain at just $4.00 and had all the parts (plus some) that our old tripod was missing!

See that crank handle right there?  That would be one of the things Mr. Thrifter LOVES the MOST about this camera tripod!

I have to say, it works REALLY well; and I love it too!

Now on to MY thrift finds for this week.  So much for NOT going thrifting!  Huh?

I fell in love with this cross stitch piece the moment it caught my eye.  I'm thinking part of why I like it so well, is I'm sure somebody spent a LOT of time working on it.

But . . .

As much as I love it, I know I have some friends that will love it EVEN more.  Now I just have to choose whom to gift it to.  That's hard when more than one friend loves horses!

Here's an up close look at the detail in the picture.

Those horses are so lovely, I just wanna grab the reins and trot off into the sunset.

I was really happy to find this enamel popcorn bowl.

Pete and I love to eat microwave popcorn, but hate to reach into the buttery mess of a bag.  This nice cup shaped bowl solves that problem!

Oh . . . and it's big enough to hold LOTS of popcorn!

I also love this Hull pottery cream pitcher.

I have a soft spot for Hull pottery pieces.

Don't you just love what it says there?  It says, "USA."  Love that Made in America stuff.

It's always a good thrift day when I can find cobalt glass!  It doesn't have to be old to make me smile, either.

Here I found a new cobalt coffee cup, a juice glass that was caked full of candle wax (Yuck!) and a nice cologne bottle from Yardley.

It really goes well with the Avon cobalt cologne bottles I already have.  I can't wait to have a curio cabinet to display all of my cobalt glass!

Just the thought of that makes me smile all over!

Notice it still has cologne in it?  It smells pretty good too!  If you like that old cologne kinda smell anyway.

Here I found several treasures for the bathroom.  I love all the Hallmark stuff by Marjorie Bastin.  Unfortunately, most of it isn't Made in America, but it's all still lovely just the same.

Out of the treasures above, this was my favorite.  It's the cutest little soap dish EVER!

Now to work it into the bathroom. . . Hmmm . . .

Apples, apples everywhere!  Apples, apples here to share!

I can NEVER resist anything that has apples.  Especially, the half-eaten wooden apples and the wooden apples in the crate.

I think I actually squealed, out loud, with delight--right there in the Goodwill store--upon finding these delightful treasures.

They are happily situated on their respectful shelves in my kitchen orchard.

More wooden treasures!

A lovely handmade bear.  Another hand carved wooden bowl, from Hawaii.  A wooden bell that makes a nice chime when shook and an Easter egg decoration.

The Easter egg is NOT wood.

I'm not sure why I grouped it with the wooden treasures, but lets go with it okay.

Of course our inspections officer had to take a close look and a couple sniffs of the carved bear.

He gave it a once over and his seal of approval.

This adorable bear is complete with rubber bands for moving and posing his arms and legs.  He is sitting next to me, watching me type this post.

And now that you all think I'm crazy for talking like the bear is "alive," I'll move on.

I REALLY liked this Avon cologne bottle.  Because we all know how much I L-O-V-E farm themed stuff, don't we?  A LOT!

Isn't he just neat-O?  I sure think s-O!

As you can see, it's a rooster.  Cock-a-doodle-do to you!

I love the cover on this old photo album, in this lot of goodies I found.  The photo pages are a bit rough.  So I haven't figured out how I'm going to put it to use yet.

But with that gorgeous cover, who could pass it up!  Right?

I also loved these Bridge Tally card packets.  You have to love Hallmark and American Greeting products.  Well, okay, you don't have to.

But I sure do!

I also found a miniature clipboard and several vintage greeting cards.

Too CUTE!

A hinged lid cat tin can for my--to be shared--VERY large tin can collection.  I'm still waiting for shelves to display them all on.

Someday!

I also found this cast iron trivet.  Very much like the silly saying trivets my grandmother had around her kitchen.

I loved what it said, too!
"Pa is the boss as everyone knows.  But what Ma says always goes."

These items ALSO passed our Quality Control inspection.

Nice little plaque about robins.

Can you believe it?

I wrote a post about robins yesterday, you can read the post HERE.

I thought it was TOO funny that then, I found a plaque about them.

Back in my Thrifty Thursday, #6 post, I found a plate that said the same thing as this one, only in blue.

The color isn't the only difference, though.  This version of the plate is from 1978.  Also, the blue plate features a different pair of children engaging in a different activity.

Now that's cool.

SCORE!  Another set of paper mache choir boys made in Japan.  These little devils angles were hiding in three separate places in the store.  Once I found one I knew there had to be more.

So the HUNT was on!  And I found them ALL!

I love 'em!

Now to find two candles to fit and put them on display at Christmas time.

I really thought these were pretty.

Hand painted apples on frosted glass salt & pepper shakers and a vinegar decanter.

SO pretty!

A set of knitting needles and a Wee Little Garden Gnome.

Maybe having him, will bring me luck with my garden ventures this spring/summer.

After all . . .

The box does say he'll bring a tiny Bit O' Luck!  I was hoping for a bit more than a TINY bit o' luck--but I'm NOT complainin'.

I'll take what I can get!

For $1.00 I got these lovely stitched Himmel pieces.  I'm going to iron them and have them framed, to hang on the wall.

Or . . . maybe to sell.

They are SO cute!

The little girl and her songbird, singing to her while she rests on a tree branch.

Her brother sitting on his branch, listening to the songbird sing.

I love things that I know someone took the time to sit down and make with their very own hands.

There's just something special about it.

It sort of makes me think of the ladies in the Jane Austen novels.  They were always at some sort of needle work.

I can't wait to have this framed and hang it in my living room!

Another handmade piece.  A scarecrow for the front door.

Now I can't wait for fall . . .

OKAY, that was a joke!  I'm ready for spring to REALLY show up!

But this cute scarecrow will give me something to look forward to when fall does arrive.

Last but NOT least!  My Fenton bear for only $2.00 at the Goodwill.

He's hand painted by the artist who signed his bottom.

I think that he is either Mother of Pearl or Opal.

Not sure yet.

The proof's in the sticker . . . and the stamped Fenton mark on his back side.

I went back a few Thrifty Thursdays to find that I had purchased another Fenton bear in cobalt blue, for only $1.00.

You can check him out HERE.

AUGUST, Peridot.  Just so happens to be my birthstone . . . SMILE!

"Hi, this is August, the Lion-Hearted Bear.  I'm funny and love to laugh.  I'm also proud--holding my head up high.  You'll be proud of me, too."

Well, that does it for this week.  Until next week, Happy Thrifting!

May all your thrifty adventures yield you thrifty treasures.

All of the above purchases were priced between $.25 cents and $7.50--with several color tag sales--and were bought at our local Goodwill stores, over the past week.
